SMOFcon (this is quintessentially the convention to go to if you are interested in running a convention. There are others local events such as ConComCon for the Pacific northwest and Construction for the San Francisco Bay Area that help local convention runners, but SMOFcon is THE event during the year of this type)

April 25 - 28, 2008 - Corflu 2008 - Las Vegas, Navada - This is a convention a gathering of the fanzine fan community

WisCon 30 - May 23 - 26, 2008 - Madison, Wisconsin - Feminist Science Fiction and Fantasy convention, annually over Memorial Day Weekend in Madison, WI. Programming ranges from fannish panels to readings, to becoming a writer. Tiptree auctions benefit the annual Tiptree award for gender-bending fiction.

August 29 - September 1, 2008 DragonCon 2008 - Atlanta, Georgia This is one of the larger in terms of numbers for a science fiction convention with some emphasis on media and gaming and more. Also, they are head to head with WORLDCON, the premier convention in the world for true fen.

September 4 - 7, 2009 - North American Discworld Convention 2009 - Tempe, Arizona. (a Discworld and Terry Pratchett related event)
