NWSFS May Social
Saturday, May 19, 2001

Please join us for our May Social Saturday, May 19, at the home of Fran and Jack Beslanwitch , in south Seattle, the Skyway area, at 9616 54th Avenue South between Renton Avenue South and Roxbury on 54th. The social will begin at 3:00 PM and end at about 10 PM.

As usual, this is a potluck, but with a difference that we started last year and will continue this year. This is a comfort food social so bring your favorite comfort foods whether it be fried chicken, macaroni and cheese and chococlate and all and sundry forms of chocolate. Oh, and did we mention chocolate. We did? Well, it bears repeating. Last year, Jack and Fran's idea of comfort food was cooking two five pound coho Copper River Salmon. Well, we were able to pick up at least one five pound copper river salmon on the Friday before the social. So, those that get here early will partake of the best salmon in the world. In addition, we have Canadian crab and salmon that were given us by Jodie and Michael Scanlon after their fishing trip to BC. So, time permitting, we will have steamed crab and additional salmon as well. Also, please note that a gas barbecue is available, so if your idea of comfort food is something fresh off the barbie then bring it to be cooked.

Keeping with this theme, bring your favorite guilty pleasures for movies. DVD format preferred, but we can accept VHS as well. This year we have a large screen to play it on and a HDTV set top box so that you can experience the latest technology in broadcast television. However, I will note that there is a relative desert in HD content. Some of Channel 4, 5, and 9, most of 7 and one feed of HBO. Still, there is enough to give you an idea.

Bring your swim suit and try out our brand new hot tub. During day light hours check out Kubota Gardens, which lies a block away. If you have not had the benefit of visiting one of the most beautiful parks in Seattle, this is your opportunity. Kubota Garden is a 20 acre of landscape that '..blends Japanese garden concepts with native Northwest plants. The property was given to the city of Seattle in 1987 as a gift from the estate of master landscaper Fujito Kubota. Kubota was a horticultural pioneer when he began building Japanese design techniques with North American materials in his display garden in 1927. The Gardens are a spectacular setting of hills and valleys, interlaced with streams, waterfalls, ponds, bridges, and rock outcroppings with a rich array of plant material.' Also, you will get a chance to take a look at the brand new stroll garden that has just been finished recently. If for no other reason, you may want to attend this social for this reason alone.

All are welcome. NWSFS members are encouraged to attend, and non-members in the community are welcome. We hope to see you there. Please note that nominations for the NWSFS officers will take place at this social at some point.
